Differential pressure sensors

Differential pressure sensors are invaluable in applications where understanding the pressure difference between two points is more critical than knowing the absolute pressure. Their ability to provide precise, reliable measurements in various industrial processes — from flow measurement to leak detection — makes them essential tools in maintaining system efficiency and safety. Their independence from atmospheric pressure also enhances their versatility and reliability in diverse environments.

How differential pressure sensors work

A differential pressure sensor is an instrument used to measure the pressure difference between two different points in a system. It is frequently used in various applications, e.g. in ventilation and air conditioning technology, in the process industry, in building automation and in medical technology.

A differential pressure sensor works according to the diaphragm principle. It has two hermetically sealed chambers, each with a process connection, separated from each other by a flexible membrane with a bonded resistance bridge. The process connections are positioned in front of and behind a potential pressure reduction, allowing the pressures to act on the membrane in an opposing direction. Provided that the pressure within the chambers remains consistent, the membrane will retain its flat configuration. When the pressure in one of the chambers is subject to a change, the membrane tilts towards the chamber with the lower pressure. This deformation is converted into an electrical voltage or current and can then be read by a digital display or computer system.

Types of differential pressure sensors

With a differential pressure sensor, a distinction is made between piezoresistive and capacitive measurement.

Piezoresistive differential pressure sensor

In a differential pressure sensor of this type measures the difference in pressure between two points using the piezoresistive effect. The change in resistance is directly proportional to the strain caused by pressure on the diaphragm.

Capacitive differential pressure sensor

Capacitive differential pressure sensors are equipped with a capacitor integrated in a silicon chip. This allows conclusions to be drawn about the resulting pressure difference based on changes in the device’s capacity.

Differential pressure sensors – areas of application

Differential pressure sensors are used in a variety of applications, from industrial processes to everyday appliances. Some common applications are:

  • Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems: Differential pressure sensors are used in HVAC systems to monitor the air flow and optimise the efficiency of ventilation.
  • Filter monitoring: In many industrial applications, differential pressure sensors are used to monitor the condition of filters. An increase in the pressure difference across a filter can indicate a blockage and the need for cleaning or replacement.
  • Fluid monitoring: Differential pressure sensors are used in medical technology and laboratory applications to monitor and control the pressure in liquid or gas lines.
